The JULY TREE

In saturday's Daily Herald is an article about the flamboyant tree written by Sir Roland Richardson, a famous painter of our island and well known because of his paintings of this splendid tropical tree. July is the month in which you can see its vibrant colour, mostly red/orange, but sometimes a dark yellow, allover the island.

When we arrived back home after a long vacation some weeks ago, our flamboyant tree was almost bare, we feared its condition was very bad because we were told it had not been raining during a long time. But look at it now! One picture shows you it's very early blossoms on the branch in the upper right corner, whereas the second one shows the tree as it is today.

In the article Sir Roland Richardson describes in a beautyful way the feelings and passion the July Tree evokes in him. The sensation he feels that, while painting, his favourite subject of painting seems to play an active role instead of simply being just a tree.

The Royal Poinciana is said to have been introduced to our region from Madagascar and is claimed as the national tree of neighbouring island St. Kitts. However, it is found around the world. Yet on many a Caribbean island people claim it as their own, as if the tree is one with us. It's very colour deserves an equal place beside other lauded characteristics like there are the turquoise Caribbean waters and the abundance of sun.

In de Daily Herald van zaterdag staat een artikel over de flamboyantboom, geschreven door Sir Roland Richardson. Dit is een beroemde schilder van dit eiland, vooral bekend door de vele schilderijen met deze schitterende tropische boom als onderwerp. Juli is de maand waarin de boom bloeit en dan kan je de rood-oranje, soms donkergele bloesem over het hele eiland zien. Toen we enkele weken geleden na een lange vakantie thuiskwamen, leek onze boom er met zijn kale takken slecht aan toe; het had in lange tijd niet geregend, zo vertelde men ons. Maar moet je de boom nu zien! Op de eerste foto zie je in de rechter bovenhoek een aarzelende start van de bloei en op de volgende is te zien hoe hij nu bloeit.

In het artikel beschrijft Roland Richardson heel mooi zijn gevoelens voor deze boom en de passie die deze bij hem weet op te wekken. De gewaarwording die hij heeft dat, terwijl hij hem schildert, de boom een actieve rol speelt bij het proces, in plaats van alleen maar een boom te zijn.

Over de 'Royal Poinciana' wordt gezegd dat hij in deze regio terechtgekomen is vanuit Madagaskar en dat men hem op buureiland St. Kitts als nationale boom beschouwt. Hij is echter over de hele wereld te vinden. Maar toch, op veel Caraibische eilanden wordt hij als eigen gezien, bijna alsof men zich ermee vereenzelvigt. Zijn vibrerende kleur verdient evenzeer een plaats als andere geprezen kenmerken van het gebied, zoals de turqoise wateren en het in overvloed aanwezige zonlicht.
