Four Summers ago, Colorado

In Four Summers ago I describe in several posts our first motorhome trip through the USA in 2009.

This trip started in New Mexico and we traveled the Rocky Mountains, including the Canadian Rockies.

After we left the dry and empty landscape of Arizona, we drove north and reached the state of Colorado via Cortez. Our first stop was in Durango. We stayed at a very quaint campground, that seemed more to be a place for resident campers than our kind of travelers. Because the first part of our trip had taken more time than we expected, partly because of the distance (it was our first time in this endless country) and a change in our original route, we decided to move on the next day. Our motorhome needed its first service and there was a dealer in the Denver area.

The route from Durango to Denver took us via Silverton and Ouray. Silverton was a lovely old mining town, where we had a coffeebreak. The landscape had changed dramatically by this time, as you can see in the first  picture of the storyboard above. So green compared to the brownish country of New Mexico and Arizona! And it was cold here! Ouray was our next stopover, a place so great and with a hotspring where we wanted to spend some time. By now we also discovered we were in the Western, with even some little children waring cowboy hats!

Denver was reached and what followed were a few less exciting days, with the dealer stuff and staying at a very crowded campground in a busy, noisy (traffic) area north of this city. The 3rd picture above is of the Denver airport, which was an intriguing building with the tentlike roof.

Fortunately for us there was a huge outlet center in the neighborhood and coming from the Caribbean where we did not have these facilities, we (or I at least) felt a little in shopping heaven.
