One of the collages I made during our two months' trip this summer. Made with limited materials on hand, just a gluestick and some cardboard support. This series of collages reflects my overall vacation mood: bright colours and topics we came across while being on the road.

Some lighthouses in Maine

My latest post was about docks and piers, today I have some yummie lighthouses for you!

In a way it's pretty strange that I am so fond of the sea and all its characteristics, for I have lived far away from seas and oceans for most of my life. Maybe it is a 'former life' something? But it is a fact that I immensely enjoyed our time on the Maine coast this summer. Here's what we visited:

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. It is situated at the end of a nearly mile-long breakwater in Rockland Harbor. On the eastern side is West Penobscot Bays and views of North Haven and Vinalhaven islands

(it could of course also be an island thing with me...)
Along the western side is the protected water of Rockland Harbor. and this is the lighthouse at the end of the walk!

Owl's Head Light

situated at the south end of Rockland Harbor.

The 1854 keeper's house is a residence for Coast Guard personnel and the surrounding grounds are now a beautiful state park. This lighthouse was my very favorite, mainly because of the views!

and then we visited Portland!

and embarked on a boat that took us along even more lighthouses:

Maine!

Browsing the many pictures I made in this state, I decided to publish our experiences per topic, starting with docks, piers, landings. I really fell in love with them!

Piers, docks, landings: places of action, reflection, to go fishing or simply being lazy in the sun, slowing down after a long summer day. For me they illustrate part of the great time we had in the state of Maine.

This is the second part of our travel journal. As you may know, we have a small motorhome in the USA and like to travel there during two months each summer. I wrote about the state of New York in this post.

Since our main goal was the state of Maine, we did not spend much time in Vermont and New Hampshire. O.k., we could see there was natural beauty in abundance, but the Atlantic Ocean lured us to go East, to admire the coast in all its glory, so after Vermont we drove the Kangamangus Highway (great) and entered Maine via Bethel, in the north western part of the state. Our first campground stop was in Augusta, where one of our neighbours used (at least for us) a most unusual kind of transport!

we changed our initial plans to visit Arcadia Nat'l Park and visited the city of Camden instead. From Mt. Battie there was a glorious overview of the Penobscot Bay and all its islands; we spotted this merry guy in one of the shop windows of this lovely fisherman's place, he seemed to advice us to not take life too serious...

and in the harbour there was more good advice to take at heart!

As soon as we arrived in coastal Maine it was all (and I say ALL) about lobster; these lobstertraps we saw in front of a restaurant in the harbour

Our USA trip (1)

It took me some days to get the States out of my system and get used to the Caribbean again!

I have been thinking about how to bring some of our travel experiences to you on this blog and maybe the best is to just show pictures, a little description since I know most people are way too busy to read (alas, I think) and I will finish the post with one of my Limited collages...

We started our trip in Upstate New York and headed east, for one of our goals was the state of Maine. Above you can see Seneca Lake, one of the Finger Lakes, where we drove a beautiful scenic byway

after which we headed to the Adirondack Mountains, a name that for some reason always has fascinated me. Gradually, after having left the interstate at Syracuse, we get into the beauty of this state, as you can see on the picture above: Putnam Lake in the southern Adirondacks

The eastern border of the state of New York is for a big part formed by Lake Champlain; here we crossed it by ferry because the bridge was being renovated. This took us into the state of Vermont (next time more)

travel series 2011

Hey, welcome!! Finally, after an almost 3-month absence, I'm back home. During our voyage throughout 10 states, I managed to make some collages. With limited materials (a gluestick, some waste cardboard and tourist magazines) I found myselfhappily collaging after long days of traveling in our motorhome.

The impressions this voyage has made on me, are reflected in this new series: happy colors, the theme of fall, art meetings, even the Civil War, it is all there! The collages surely represent my overall vacation mood, which make them impressionist, abstract, I don't know and it does not matter to me either. I just had fun doing these and hope that you find that back while looking at them.

On with cleaning now, since our house is a pretty mess after such a long time, two tropical storms and many a party of bugs and other tropical things...Hope to see you back soon, thanks for visiting!
