In it you can see some of the elements of which the one above has been made, like the text and the man sitting on the museum bench. Since some time I have been trying my hand at a bigger size of collages, mostly they are about 8 x 11 inch now. And immediately I discovered that it is getting more difficult, at least in my style of making collages. One of the aspects one has to adjust is the scale of working, e.g. I think that too much is happening in this one,that is something I definitely have to work on, it is good that the learning never stops!

And you, if you have been following my collage making, what do you think? Some feedback would be great, thanks already...

Tropical Thursday

Since some time I have the tradition of posting a weekly storyboard on Facebook that's called

Tropical Thursday

With the help of Photoshop and one of the storyboard actions of The Coffeeshop, I show typical tropical images, details of all kind of things that are unmistakebly tropical.

I have wanted to do this same on blogger, but somehow it does not do justice to these storyboards like in Facebook. Then I came up with an alternative: from today on I will show the original pictures here on my blog every Thursday, so then I expect there's is something for everyone. Also I will provide some more background information of where the images were made (note: I'am no representative of any tourist promotion organization ;-))

Downtown Philipsburg (the Dutch part of the island) is a lovely place, where you can have a drink, lunch or whatever after your shopping spree! It has a secluded terrace that is shaded by a huge almond tree. A big netting has been fixed to prevent the almonds to fall into your drink (or on your head)
Can you imagine I love this place, seeing all the colours?

The pink fretwork is called gingerbread,you can see it all over the island. And, eh, yes, that's the name of the place!

Visiting Rayna!

Long before I started my own blog, I have been visiting websites and blogs of artists in the field of art quilting, collaging, painting and everything else that inspired me. Rayna Gillman is one of these artists and over the years we developed, what might be called, an online friendship by commenting on our respective blogs.

This summer, before we started our trip along the North East coast of the US, I received information on Rayna's whereabouts and some travelinfo, but I had no idea if we were going to make it... To challenge my good luck, I took with me the scarve I won in one of her give-aways (first picture) and it worked!

Since we were in the 'vicinity' of New Jersey before leaving for Virginia, my husband asked if I would still want to visit "that lady", he (of course) did not know anything about Rayna at that time. 'Well, certainly' I said, I would love that!

So we drove to a state park somewhere near her home, called her and she also was enthusiastic to meet us the next day

meeting in 'real life' was so much fun!

We had lunch at Rayna's, talked about whatever topic coming up and then she took us to her studio, a place where she, in her own words, really feels happy. I was too absorbed by seeing the place where everything happens, that I forgot to make any pictures...


It was the day before the commemoration of the 9-11 disaster and we went to a place, called Eagle Rock. From this place one has a spectaculair view on Manhattan and Rayna told that in the days after the tragic event, many New Jersey people came here to look at the other side of the Hudson river. For weeks on an end the view of Manhattan was blocked and diminished by smoke and ashes, just imagine! Eagle Rock has been turned into a memorial since this summer.

we must indeed never forget...

My husband now also knows Rayna, for him she is not 'that lady' anymore... We enjoyed our visit so much, I will never forget this lovely day. Thank you Rayna!

Storyboard

Too busy for regular posting...

We are decluttering our stuff, husband is doing the technical part, me the rest, it is a lot, sigh. Furniture for sale, and all the things that are not being used anymore, time to let go to people who need this right now, time for simplicity.

We will move back to Europe in less than a year and don't want to take it with us again. So for now, no new work, but a storyboard I made some time ago instead.

Fiber art from nature

On this picture of a coconut tree at the beach

you can see this cloth, this piece of 'fiber', in the upper right corner.

Of course I did not tear it from the tree, it was lying under the tree a week later...

and I thought: why not show it to my blogreaders?

To me it is just a miracle that the tree just grows and apparently knows how to weave by its very nature

This cloth is rather flexible and I am thinking of using it in collage work; of course I will show it then!

It's Wednesday

and I'm still having trouble to get in my usual rhythm of working with fabrics and/or paper, the inspiration is not kicking in yet. But, while I am looking at one of my favorite vacation pictures, it might 'happen' soon...

Oh, and, great happening for our island: Queen Beatrix, Crown Prince Willem Alexander and his wife Maxima will visit Sint Maarten tomorrow!
