Wabi sabi painting

 

 

After 'Winter' we chose 'Wabi Sabi' as topic for our new painting efforts.

Hardly anybody in our group was familiar with it, so it took some time to explain the meaning of wabi sabi. But now, after a few weeks, most of the members got the hang of it and I have already seen some very lovely ones...

 

Here is mine!

 the paintings will be hung by the end of March, so there is some more time for other experiments I guess

 

Never would have thought that painting after a picture would be my destination and I still swoon over some abstracts, so maybe..?

Exercising

 

 

Hello!

 

Obviously it is hard to break up with bad habits, ahem,

but here I am,

 back on the blog!

 

Last week was full with taking apart all kind of bags a friend gave me. Some were old, some new but ugly, but all had zippers and other haberdashery that good be useful in future projects.

 

I also received thousands of ebooks from another friend and have slowly been sorting these out and put them in alphabetical files on the computer. Some I have left out, like the book a certain mister H from Germany wrote that caused too much trouble...

 

By now I am finished doing these boring yet rewarding jobs and it is time for creativity again.

 

Last year I made several native american paintings after pictures I made when we traveled New Mexico in 2009. The digital collage above is composed of two of these pictures. The painting of the pueblo dwelling has a very different colourscheme, but the colours of the picture below have not been changed. Can you see the tipi poles in the collage?

A week of blogging

..five days of blogging, a little every day

 

it was not so hard this time; it seems

that once you are back in the blogging mode, the subjects automatically jump into your mind...

Today is quiet, with some thriftstore visiting in the morning; however, I found nothing this time.

Tomorrow I am going to help with the catering for a friend who will celebrate her birthday, we will be very busy feeding about 50 persons...

Posting tomorrow is very unlikely, but you never know, for now

Olives instead...

 

 

Hi!

 

Friday, so it is market in our village near the Spanish Mediterranean coast

 

As it is a cold and grey winter day here, not all market vendors were present. The only alley that was complete was the one with plants, sausages, veggies and fruits, nuts, eggs and

 

... olives!

 

 

it was impossible to resist these delicious, garlic filled green olives

since

they play a fantastic role as a 'tapa' with our evening drinks...

 

 

the branches are of a mimosa tree I passed on my way home!

 I chose to cut these instead of the tulips that also were for sale at the market.

 

All together it has become quite a Mediterranean scene, don't you think?

Thursday is for painting

 

 

Some time ago I wrote about a new topic we received for our painting group

 

It was 'Winter';

 

 a season I don't have very warm feelings for, to put it mildly...

 

Though there is no obligation at all, I usually try to stick to the chosen subject, because it widens my view and sometimes challenges to work out of one's comfort zone, not that I already have one with painting, haha!

 

 

The very first wintery thing that came into my mind was white of course. Btw: I chose an old canvas to work on, being almost sure that Winter was to become a failure considering my feelings...

I divided the canvas in three vertical zones and glued some shimmery papers and foils after painting the white and gray.

 

 

 

Something meaningful was still missing and thus came the word 'Verlangen', which is Dutch for 'Longing for' and the Buddha image (I don't know if it is Buddha, or another Buddhist figure)

 

This painting started around Christmas last year and that part is reflected in the middle section, at least that is my understanding which means that the painting has been created rather spontaneous and evolved into this...

the period of candlelight, parties and yes, longing for...in my case for a warmer season. The dots are gold acrylic, the yellow paper rippings also have gold on it, unfortunately not visible on this picture

 

the blue side parts looked a bit like ice to me, but were too blue I thought for looking like ice to skate upon, it had to be a bit more dirty. Buddha and the image at right disappeared a bit and now the golden middle stood out more.

My winter was done... and is now on the gallery wall of our club.

The last picture I took this morning with artificial light, so that doesn't do the painting justice, but hey, you got an idea!

New digital collage

Sometimes, when there is some time left between activities, I use that time for playing on the computer.

While browsing my inspiration picture map, I came across this shell picture. It is beautiful as is, but I layered and blended it with a picture of a brochure of a well-known Saint Martin restaurant in Marigot (FWI) and this is the result: a digital collage like I have made many before, in my colours and my style.

 I could as well have named it Mostly Turquoise Shell, don't you think?

 

Ah, whatever, I am glad that not all my digital collage skills have left.

Spain, now

 

Hi!

 

Yesterday I received a comment from a lady that made me think...

 

It said that just reading about my life in Spain was interesting, because it is so different from hers.

 

While all these years of blogging I have mainly been writing about my more or less artistic endeavours, I never realised that reading about my everyday life could be interesting to someone. O.k. I had more colorful things to show while living on that Caribbean Island, but Spain also has its things. And yes, reading about everyday life is something I also appreciate when visiting other blogs.

 

This makes blogging way more easy for me, because the emphasis is taken a bit off my artistic production (which is a bit low these days), so now there should be enough to write about...

 

Here we go, then!

 

 

This picture is taken in the village of Benissa, some 6 km's from our coastal village. Oranges hanging on trees are a common sight in Spain, even in the village streets. Do you notice the typical Spanish balcony with the wrought iron supports? Most balconies have tiles underneath, as can be seen in this post

 

 

There is an abundance of oranges in this time of the year.

We shot this picture about a year ago, while walking through the fields near the Montgo mountain. It is allowed to simply walk through vineyards and orchards since there are not many roads in the 'campo' (agricultural fields). There even are little roads where you can pick oranges to your heart's content. However, I prefer to pay the little amount of money they cost, because the farmers work for it and deserve a fair pay.

 The Montgo mountain is one of the high mountains (or hills) of the Costa Blanca region.

 

Another 'familiar' sight in this time, the almond blossoms. From the beginning of February on, the valleys are full of white and soft pink vistas because of the almond orchards that are in full bloom. It is a fantastic happening and draws lots of tourists that come especially for this phenomenon

 

To finish today's Spanish post, a picture of a traditional 'Riu Rau' building. Riu Rau's were originally places where the grapes could dry to turn into raisins. Though over the years many old Rius Rau's have disappeared, there is a trend of reforming and rebuilding going on. This one is new and being used for the weekly farmer's market in the village of Jesus Pobre nearby.
